[USCC] What is anaerobic composting?

I Googled it and got 7,800+ hits for just the "anaerobic composting" phrase
(in the "Advanced Search" mode of "exact wording or phrase") ... lots of
papers published on line.
I know that some European technologies use this as a "front end" (methane
gas production) to their back end aerobic composting process (e.g. Kompogas,
www.kompogas.ch, click on the "EN" button in the upper right to read their
site in English). It's real, being used, and maybe the future of getting
BOTH energy and composted soil amendments from organic residuals. Maybe
something we should all be considering?
