I have used many types of compost heap aeration tool and have now found one which really does the job well.
It is called a 'Compost Mate' (see http://www.reln.com.au/compost-mate-p-130.html or http://www.wigglywigglers.co.uk/shop/product.html?product_id=116 for instance) and it is a strong metal 'corkscrew' shape.
This can be screwed into the heap and a plug of material extracted. If the plug is too heavy or cannot be pulled out of the heap, the Compost Mate can be unscrewed a half-turn and then the operative can try again.
I have used several other home compost heap aeraters, mainly ones with tines which fold up when pushed into the pile and fold out when the tool is pulled out. I have broken this kind of tool quite easily, or been unable to push it in properly or then pull it out.
But the Compost Mate is excellent. Pity it's made in Australia and has to be imported....
