In approximately 1995/1996 Maryland Evironmenta Service conducted and an experiment using tire chip as a bulking agent in the composting process. The test was headed by Mr. Rhody Holthause. The results of the testing may still be available by contacting either Ann Bleinberger or Richard Kelley at Maryland Environmental Service:

I am interested in hearing from composters who have experience with tire
chips as an alternative bulking agent.
