[USCC] statistics or best guesses about amateur composting

Hi all,

I am new to this email list but I thought I might as well start off with a tough question. 

How many people practice backyard (amateur) composting?
What do they compost?
Why do they compost?
Why do so many people not compost?

Some of these questions I already have hunches about, but I have been searching the internet trying to find hard data on these matters. Any help you can give me would be greatly appreciated.
