Katio,

The material you are referring to is called Specified Risk Material (SRM)
by the USDA APHIS. The Kansas Department of Health and Environment has
developed a guidance document for facilities in determining how to dispose
of these materials. http://www.kdheks.gov/waste/guidance/sw05-02.pdf We
felt that we should have a practical guidance document that would allow the
option of composting, but maintain tight control over the final compost.

The paunch material from the slaughter of livestock should not contain any
of the SRM and therefore should not need any special handling of the
compost. We have two large paunch composting facilities in Kansas and
neither have had problems with SRM being delivered to their facilities.

Feel free to contact me if you would like to discuss this subject further.

Katio,
I have not heard of any such regulations
(Let's not forget that BSE is found in the brain and spinal tissue)

Subject: [USCC] Composting and BSE (Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy)

Hi all:

I would like to know if, there are restrictions for the use of compost,
made
from wastes generated in a slaughterhouse as, for example, the content of
cattle stomaches (grass), seeking the prevention of diseases, as the BSE
(Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy).
Thanks a lot, again.
