Teach the necessary ingredients of a backyard compost pile by having one group add water (blue construction paper if you can't do actual water into a pile), another add air (pitchfork or shovel turning if a real pile, blow if pretend), another add "greens" (grass if real, green construction paper strips if not), and a final group add "browns" (leafs if real, brown construction paper cut into the shapes of leafs if not).

hello! we are brainstorming for interactive and interpretive activities we
could include at our compost station--part of a larger "outdoor discovery
area" here at the ogden nature center. does anyone have any ideas regarding
a compost-related activity children could engage in outside near the compost
heap? materials/activity would need to be feasible in all weather types...

thanks for any replies!
