[USCC] ACCELERATING DECOMPOSITION

Hi Ron,
We did this way back (25 years ago) before the introduction of landfill tax
and the Landfill directive. The rationale was that decomposition was
inevitable, eventually. With the best will in the world, at some time
capping is going to crack, and anyway there is water in the fill, so it is
impossible to keep it dry forever. So, if decomposition is inevitable
better to optimise the nutrients and moisture content and get it over with
as quickly as possible, maximise landfill gas so that it is useable. Get
through the acid phase and into the methanogenic phase as quickly as
possible so that metals get re-precipitated. By getting the settlement over
as quickly as possible, you can either develop the site with more
predictability or you get more air-space.
Biosolids did accelerate the process. A guy at Harwell was the guru and I
think that in frustration that Europe would not use landfill as bioreactors
he brain-drained to the USA.
regards
Tim

Subject: [USCC] ACCELERATING DECOMPOSITION
Hello Compost (and organics recycling) World,
Does anyone out there have any 'real world' experience with using the
addition of biosolids to landfills as a means of accelerating 'waste'
decomposition? Thus....creating more landfil space over time???
Thanks,
Ron
