Bill,
The composting of biosolids requires an amendment. The C/N ratio is
around 10:1. The amount of bulking agent depends on the percent solids
as a result of dewatering. The lower tjhe solids content the greater the
amount of bulking agent. For example at solids content of 18-20% the
volumetric ratio is usually 3:1. If the solids content is 23% then the
ratio drops to close to 2:1. Another factor is the technology being
used. With ASP systems the bulking agent is important for both porosity
and moisture control. This is because there is no turning and the
bulking agent provides the porosity for the air. The moisture content of
the mix of biosolids and bulking agent should not exceed 60% moisture.
With the windrow method I also like to see around 60% moisture content
for the mix. Moisture control could be more difficult. However porosity
is less critical but still important since you rely on convective air
flow.
It is important to meet the USEPA 503 regulations (latest revision 2003)
for both pathogens and vector attraction.
I would treat animal mortality the same manner as biosolids since the
material contains pathogens. You may need to do a materials balance with
poultry or other animals or their waste. This would provide you with the
amount of bulking agent needed.
