[USCC] Composting Sewage Grit

Ron Et All:
Our facility is a regional biosolid compost facility and received wastewater
biosolids from six different municipalities. Two of those facilities have
grit chambers. Those two facilities mix that grit in with their dewatered
biosolids, simply by adding it to the roll off box. We are a windrow type
compost operation and have found that it actually helps create a better
blend of product, because the final product already has some the inorganic
properties of a manufactured topsoil. As a matter of fact, our wood
feedstock often has a relatively high percentage of dirt incorporated. We
have found that 15 to 20 % (no lab data to confirm) by volume is the max
amount of dirt from a composting perspective. Anything more that that begins
to have a dramatic effect on
time/temp, which has a great affect on the number of days in process.

Ron,
Typically, there is proportionally very little organic matter in grit. I
don't think you would even get any volume reduction but it depends on the
particular community. I have no idea what any collected compost could be
used for.

Hello Compost World,
Does anyone know if there are companies/municipalities out there composting
sewage grit (as a means disposal)?
Thanks,
Ron
