[USCC] Forced Aeration and Odor Control Energy Use

Jim:
One in-vessel manufacturer I am familiar with quotes an energy usage of 0.7
kWh per ton (wet basis) of compostables in an aerated static pile. For food
wastes, mixed with a carbonaceous bulking agent, you could probably assume
1300-1500 lbs/CY bulk density.
Another way of looking at it would be to take a rule of thumb for aeration
systems of 500 cubic feet per hour air flow per dry ton of volatile solids
and back calculate to figure a blower's energy consumption. I'd assume 85%
VS in the mix (based on LOI analysis of ash content), moisture of 50%, bulk
density of 1500 lbs/CY, and the use of three-phase power (and, thus, lower
horsepower blowers).
I have used Fuji ring compressors as blowers at some of my earlier
composting facilities, which are somewhat more energy conserving than
centrifugal fans. Their website is
http://www.fujielectric.com/ringc/app-rcblower.htm
I hope this helps.
Regards,
Craig

Subject: [USCC] Forced Aeration and Odor Control Energy Use
Greetings All,
I am a graduate student at NC State, and I'm doing a life-cycle
inventory of source separated food waste. I've asked a few questions
and I've always gotten some very good responses. Thanks to everyone
has responded in the past.
I'm am currently looking for energy use for the aeration of food waste
composts. I am looking for something in the units of kWh/yd3-day.
Basically, how much energy does it take to run forced aeration and/or
odor control systems. I know this may vary a great between different
systems, but I would like get some good data points. If you have good
information on this I would really appreciate the chance to speak with
you. Thanks.
Jim
