Dear Bill et al.:
If you haven't heard before, rubber has 1.5-2% Zn in it, and the breakdown of the rubber ends up in the sieved compost. If you want extra Zn in your compost, that is good. But if extra Zn would be a problem, you should avoid the rubber.
In addition, rubber may spread out the fluid part of your feedstocks, but it doesn't absorb water from the rest of the mix and promote composting as is usually seen for wood chips, shredded yard debris or woody waste, or straw. I'll send you a file of list that contains references about papers which showed Zn toxicity from using ground rubber in potting media.
Regards,
Rufus Chaney

Hello,
I am looking for a biosolids/sewage sludge ASP composting facility that currently uses scrap rubber tires as a bulking agent. If anyone could help me or knows someone with this expertise, please contact me.
Sincerely
Bill
