I recently attended a presentation put on by Paul Stamets of Fungi
Perfecti. According to the people who dragged me along to it, he is a
leading expert on mushrooms and fungi. You can see a bio and website at
http://www.fungi.com/front/stamets/index.html One of the things he talked
about in this presentation was recent experiments of his and his discovery
(and subsequent patent) of insect controls in relation to fungi and fungi
spores.

In relation to this discussion it seems to me that the variety and level
of attractiveness or repulsion that is seen between insects and
distribution of composted and decaying organic matter could be explained
and/or controlled by careful awareness and/or selection of the fungal and
other material content of the compost or other organic materials that are
used in preparing any sites.

While this seems to be a relatively new patent that does not yet have a
comercially available application, I would expect that for anybody
seriously looking at this problem or actively working with large
applications he might be willing and interested to discuss the issue with
you, if he isn't already a member of this list.
