[USCC] Food Waste composting assessment

Dear Juan,

I would be interested in striking up an off-line dialogue with you about
developing the composting business model you are inquiring about. I've been
referring to it as a "distributed materials recovery" industry development
model (with our association members). Others may have their own names for
it... but it goes with the distributed water recycling and energy generation
industry structures that continue to emerge, in fits and starts, around
North America.

My belief is that the reason you don't see may of these systems (in the US)
has to do with a number of imbedded civil engineering design factors and
practices, including issues about permitting, costs (when not calculating in
transportation impacts), financing methods, operations management and
logistics. We could call them "middle market industry barriers". I'm told
there are many facilities of this scale in Europe, e.g. Switzerland (or
Austria?) alone has 300+ "compost facilities"... most of them small, ~ 10-20
tons/year. The person who knows about these (and the info management
systems to manage them) is Joe Aschl, jaschl at compostsoftware.com,
http://www.compostsoftware.com/

My vision is that there is a major "hole" in the U.S. organics (water &
energy) management marketplace for a system of these type of operations
(i.e. networks of strategically integrated smaller operations). There are a
lot of reasons why the current situation is the case. I can discuss with
you my thoughts on overcoming the current market barriers to these systems.
But let's do it offline, so as not to "bore" the USCC List Serve.

Sincerely,
Dan

Hello,
I am looking into establishing a small-scale compost operation in the
downtown area of Vancouver, Canada. Because the size of this business would
be small or medium compared to municipal operations I have had trouble
finding information about operations of a similar type. This business is
not a household compost business but rather one step larger than this.

I was wondering if anyone would care to comment if they have information in
initiatives like this anywhere else and if they had any experience with it.
I have also had trouble finding a proper price for this, in part because I
do not know anyone that operates at this scale.

Thank you for your time
