PRE-CONFERENCE TRAINING COURSES & WORKSHOPS:

:: USCC "Foundations of Compost" Training Course: The course will provide a solid understanding of the foundations of composting for operators, managers and regulators. The course will train new composters on the basic principles and techniques of composting and will reacquaint veteran composters with the underlying fundamentals of their profession. Includes review for the Compost Certification exam to be given on Wednesday. Course Instructors: Dr. Robert Rynk is an environmental and agricultural engineer, specializing in composting and waste management. He is the editor of the On-Farm Composting Handbook, and a faculty member with the State University of New York at Cobleskill;  Matthew Cotton, Integrated Waste Management Consulting, LLC, teaches SWANA's Manager of Composting Programs Course and has over 18 years experience in composting. :: Odor Control and Odor Management:  Provides an understanding of the causes of odors and methods for prevention and remediation. Participants will and learn how to minimize potential odors, and respond to regulators and the public. Course Instructors: Todd Williams, Senior Composting Scientist, CH2M HILL; Dr. Eliot Epstein, Epstein Environmental Consultants and Adjunct Professor of Public Health, Boston University School of Medicine; Charles Alix, Senior Engineer, MWH America. :: Green Roofs for Healthy Cities "Green Roof Design" Training Course: This introductory training course on green roof infrastructure design presents many of the tools and techniques needed to meet green roof project objectives on schedule, to specification, and within budget. The training will enhance your skills in understanding the performance criteria of different green roof elements, and understanding the major design principles for a successful green roof project. 

Course Instructor:  Haven Kiers is a Landscape Architect with a lifelong passion for green roofs.

:: Compost Use in Agriculture, Horticulture and Landscaping:  Workshop participants will learn proper compost use for specific crops and other applications. Course Instructors: 

Dr. Monica Ozores-Hampton, Research Associate at the University of Florida/SWFREC, has more than a decade of experience researching compost production and utilization; Craig Coker, Coker Consulting and Composting.

:: Baseline Technical Knowledge for Selling Compost: This course provides composters and compost marketers with a basic technical understanding of soil and plant functions and other aspects of the 'green industry' essential to the successful marketing of compost.
